European Portuguese: pronunciation, listening and everyday use

European and Brazilian Portuguese share the same linguistic foundation, but they differ noticeably in pronunciation, vocabulary and everyday expressions. Learners focused on Portugal for travel, family or work should choose that variety deliberately from the beginning.

Train your ear for the European variety

Unstressed vowels in European Portuguese are often reduced in connected speech. Pronunciation and listening therefore belong together from A1: short dialogues, frequent phrases and repeated listening are more useful than isolated vocabulary lists.

Situations such as greetings, cafés, directions and accommodation connect vocabulary with verb forms and sentence patterns. A small group provides changing conversation partners while keeping the chosen Portuguese variety consistent.
